55% of Voters Say U.S. and Allies are Winning War on Terror

Public confidence in the War on Terror rose for the fourth straight week, with 55% who now believe the U.S. and its allies are winning. Confidence is now at its highest level since November 11, when it hit a record high of 60%. Last week, 53% of voters said the U.S. held the advantage. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 18% think the terrorists are winning, while 22% say neither side is winning. (More Below)
Forty-six percent (46%) of voters say the situation in Iraq will get better in the next six months, the highest level of optimism on this score since mid-November. Twenty-three percent (23%) say the situation will worsen and another 21% say it will be stay about the same. Over a third (34%) give former President Bush positive ratings on his handling of the war, including 13% who say he did an excellent job. (Want a free daily e-mail update? Sign up now. If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Just over half (51%) say the U.S. is safer today than it was before the September 11 terrorist attacks. Thirty percent (30%) disagree, while another 19% are not sure. In the long term, 38% of voters say the U.S. mission in Iraq will be seen as a success while 41% say it will be judged as a failure. Most Republicans (72%) and 50% of unaffiliated voters say the U.S. and its allies are winning, while nearly half of Democrats (45%) agree. While nearly a quarter of democrats (23%) say the terrorists are winning, only 12% of Republicans and 18% of unaffiliateds say the same.
