At least 25 well-known colleges and universities nationwide have asked Anheuser-Busch to drop its “Fan Cans” campaign, which features school colors on Bud Light cans, amidst fears it will promote underage drinking. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 52% of Americans adults oppose the company’s plan to sell beer in school colors. Only 22% favor the promotion, while another 26% are undecided. Most adults (51%) agree with many colleges in thinking the promotion encourages underage drinking. Thirty-three percent (33%) say the “Fan Cans” idea does not promote underage drinking, and another 16% are undecided. (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook. By a nearly three-to-one margin, more men are in favor of the promotion than women. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of women are opposed to Anheuser-Busch’s plan, compared to just 35% of men. Men are fairly evenly divided on whether such a promotion encourages underage drinking on college campuses. Women overwhelmingly believe it promotes underage drinking - by a 68% to 35% margin. However, only 20% of adults say they are following news reports about the "fan cans" promotion at least somewhat closely. Forty-two percent (42%) have not followed at all. Recent polling shows that 46% of adults believe colleges and universities do not do enough to monitor students’ behavior, and 55% say schools should be held responsible for underage drinking on campus. A survey conducted just over one year ago found that 57% of Americans believed colleges and universities were not doing enough to stop underage drinking on campus. Fifty-one percent (51%) of Americans believe the legal drinking age should stay at 21, but 30% favor lowering it to 18. The latest poll also finds that 51% of adults rate alcohol as more dangerous than marijuana.
